There are a number of pack-fresh PHYSICAL traits that the Pro Set factory left it's indelible mark on the cards before being shipped out, and you can add to that in spades for the printing errors and variations. I can literally think of ten different physical or on card or left on the surface just coming directly out of an undamaged pack from an undamaged box. There are 'semi-circle' knots in the left or right middle of the front or back, there are parallel indentations that run from top to bottom of the card, highly scratched versions (one Mike Singletary I pulled looked like someone let a cat paw at it for half an hour), neatly curved corners, discrepancies in the 'gloss' (that is from surface gloss to 'sanded'), and the list continues to go on ad nauseum. I won't even begin to elaborate on the actual errors and variations themselves, that's why I posted the new checklist prior to this post. But what makes Pro Set, especially during this year, so weird and arbitrary with their packaging process is how they end up in the pack. One collector even found a sealed pack with no cards in it.. just air! Some people (I am one) have pulled packs with two or even three of the same card.. back to back to back! What's even weirder is breaking a box and finding later correction variations that were a part of the later series of printing, and then pulling a very early error!? Really? It just doesn't make any sense at all and is part of what makes Pro Set such a unique and interesting set to collect.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K6XVo0ZfAPo/TCTNWjtBmdI/AAAAAAAAACc/WsXqN-3T8W8/s200/eBay+Pics+009.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486736033469012434" />
If you click on the image above, you'll notice three box bottoms of the 1990 Pro Set Football Series 1. The one on the left (no gold borders) represents the first printing run, the middle (gold borders) represents the largest portion of the printing run, and the right (gold borders with Super Bowl XXV program ad) represents the latest run in the printing. When I cracked the left box and compared it to the others, I was surprised that I didn't find either one Marion ERR or even better a Ditka Large HOF ERR. Nonetheless, it did contain a couple of the early errors in it, like the Perry Kemp with Ken Stills picture on the back. Most of the boxes I've broken have been the middle kind, with just the gold borders. And in my searching for different boxes, seem to be the most prevalent. You'll find different errors and variations throughout these, and may even find a Marion error or Ditka Large HOF as well, seeing as one other collector has found a Ditka Large HOF in a box that also had SMALL HOFs in it as well (Huh?!). It's really weird to imagine that or how that happened. And finally, on the left, you have the later print run version (gold borders with Super Bowl XXV ad in the middle). These are definitely later in the printing run as I noticed many "corrected" variations in this box, and for some reason, most of the cards seemed to have a much 'bolder' font print than the rest of the cards in my stock.

If you still like to pick up the odd box (or case even?) you can use this information. It also should be noted that the likelihood of pulling one of the holograms is greater in the no gold borders version. And as stated above, which boxes you find won't guarantee the errors or variations included that were prevalent in that run but they may increase the likelihood.

The NEW (Way Too Big) 1990 Pro Set Football Errors and Variations Checklist

UPDATED: 9-20-2010

{This, of course, is a work in progress. Super Bowl II "Smudged" Backdrop ERR (On the front of the card, there is a "smudge" in the green background from the original Super Bowl poster artwork, and this is not a physical marking)

Super Bowl Art 2B. Barry Sanders / Rookie Of The Year - Hawaii Trade Conference PROMO (profile in uniform shot on back of card. Not pack issued.) - Usually comes around every 3-4 months on eBay or maybe on other auction sites / potentially on Beckett Marketplace

59A. Mike Ditka - Large HOF lettering on Hall of Fame Banner ERR (On the front of the card, the words “Hall Of Fame” inside the Hall of Fame banner at the bottom right of the picture is large and reaches the border of the card) - Quite a rare item. Only shows up on online sites or auctions once every 4-6 months, sometimes can be found in lots or by someone who doesn’t know it’s rarity.

75C. Cody Risien - Short Print / Late Series (Late series SP card of Cody Risien) - Not very rare, but nonetheless not easy to find and not always listed.

134Bb. Andre Rison - Trade Stripe / Clipped Number ERR (On the front of the card, there is a trade stripe; on the back of the card, the card number is clipped off on the top) - A very rare transitional item. Yet to be found by myself but nonetheless confirmed as real by two different collectors. It’s an item that takes some time asking sellers of the Risons about the card itself and might take up a small piece of time to find.

161C. Art Shell - Birthdate 11/26 / Large HOF (On the front of the card, the lettering inside the Hall of Fame banner is large; on the back, the birthdate is correctly listed as 11/26/46) - Not entirely rare, but nonetheless only shows up once every couple of weeks, maybe once a month. A ‘D’ Variation has yet to be found or confirmed. Until it is, it sounds like here say or rumor.

204A. Fred Marion - ‘Belt’ Variation (On the front of the card, John Taylor’s belt behind Fred is flapped outward, making it look phallic in nature) - Not exactly hard to FIND so much as hard to find at a reasonable price. Still a rare piece, but usually takes a little time to find someone that has listed it at below $100.

247A. Randall Cunningham - White erased text ERR (On the back of the card, the ‘ee’ in ‘three’ has been completely obscured/erased by a large white mark) - Another item that isn’t hard to find so much as it’s hard to find for less than $20 online or elsewhere.

300A. Jeff Bryant - White blur over text ERR (On the back of the card, there is a thick white line in the middle of the bio. Notes heavily obscuring the text) - Similar in nature to the Cunningham erased text error except a little harder to find. With some patience and searching they can be found for a relatively decent price.

338B. Lud Denny Promo (Promotional Variation created in very short quantity and given to select dealers. Not pack issued.) - Extremely rare just to find, have sold for $300 or more. Depicts Lud Denny’s head on the front cropped over top of Bill Parcells Head and includes a paragraph worth of information on Lud’s place in the hobby and a shot of him holding a football. These may only come around once a year if not more. It’s conjecture that only a 100 or so of these were made and were passed out to close friends, employees and dealers who had pushed Pro Set product in the Dallas area.

338C. Eric Dickerson / Jerry Reynolds - Test Card / Mock-Up Variation (On the front of the card is the Hoops Unissued Jerry Reynolds Card and on the back of the card is the back of the #338 Eric Dickerson SP. Not pack issued.) - An extremely rare variation that came out of the Pro Set archives. Before recently, wasn’t even heard of. Very hard to come across, may only be seen once or twice a year, if that.

338D. Eric Dickerson F.A.C.T. Unreleased Card - An extremely hard variation of the 338A. Eric Dickerson that was to be issued as a part of the F.A.C.T. but was pulled from the printing process very quickly due to his exclusion from the set as a whole. Also hard to find sold online, maybe once a year at best.

343B. Chris Hinton - Traded Stripe / “Has Been Named..” Interim Variation (On the front of the card, there is a trade stripe in the bottom right corner; on the back of the card, the top line starts with “Has Been Named..”) - Somewhat hard to find. I would utilize the same method as you would use in procuring a Rison Trade Stripe / Clipped Number card. Ask multiple dealers who have listed the card about the card number. A majority of dealers who sells singles of all sports are usually not abreast of the rarity of the item. File this under “transitional variations”. A ‘D’ Variation has not been found or confirmed, so until it is then it is just here say or rumor.

444B. Thurman Thomas 3D Hologram Prototype (An unbelievably rare prototype that potentially eclipses all other cards in rarity [next to 1/1 proofs or printing plates]. The card was never distributed and was more than likely made to be used in prototyping a potential hologram of the base card. It is approximately 1/4" thick with layers of plastic on the front that bring about a 3D effect. It also could've been a very rare prize card, although my sources tell me it was more than likely a hologram prototype. Almost certainly less than 5 in existence and would more than likely not show up on the second market.)

666B. Steve Young Promo (An extremely rare card that was created for the Pro Set Press Vice President, Steve Young [not the Hall Of Fame Quarterback for the 49ers]. The card has a picture of Steve Young as a high school quarterback holding a football in an open field with the Pro Set Prospect banner at the top, the Cowboys Football Helmet on the bottom left, and the title "QB - Cowboys". The back of the card is similar in design to the #338B Lud Denny Promo in that the NFLPA logo does not have any words above and below the football. Contains a hilarious write-up on the man's career with a profile picture of the man as an adult wearing some shades. A highly coveted, extremely rare card that may have only been distributed to friends and employees of Pro Set)

669B. Jeff George - Colts / Illinois Uniform, Draft Day (The front of the card depicts him throwing in an Illinois uniform, the top banner reads “Pro Set Prospect” in blue font, and his name on the bottom is in blue font, and the bottom right reads “1990 Draft, No. 1 Pick” inside a diagonal yellow snipe, and there is also the words ‘Scouting Photo‘ vertical on the left, and the Colts helmet lines the bottom banner; on the back of the card is a picture of him in his college uniform) - Not that hard to find pack issued or to find sold in a lot of the rest of the ‘Draft Day’ variations for usually no more than $20 as a whole.

669C. Jeff George - Falcons / Illinois Uniform, Draft Day (The front of the card depicts him throwing in an Illinois uniform, the top banner reads “Pro Set Prospect” in black font, and his name on the bottom is in black font, and the bottom right reads “1990 Draft, No. 1 Pick” inside a diagonal yellow snipe, and there is also the words ‘Scouting Photo‘ vertical on the left, and the Falcons helmet lines the bottom banner; on the back of the card is a picture of him in his college uniform) - Somewhat hard to find pack issued, but not too hard to find sold in a lot of the rest of the ‘Draft Day’ variations for usually no more than $20 as a whole.

669D. Jeff George - Patriots / Illinois Uniform, Draft Day (The front of the card depicts him throwing in an Illinois uniform, the top banner reads “Pro Set Prospect” in white font, and his name on the bottom is in white font, and the bottom right reads “1990 Draft, No. 1 Pick” inside a diagonal yellow snipe, and there is also the words ‘Scouting Photo‘ vertical on the left, and the Patriots helmet lines the bottom banner; on the back of the card is a picture of him in his college uniform) - Somewhat hard to find pack issued, but not too hard to find sold in a lot of the rest of the ‘Draft Day’ variations for usually no more than $20 as a whole.

669E. Keith McCants - Falcons / Alabama Uniform, Draft Day (The front of the card depicts him in an Alabama uniform, the top banner reads “Pro Set Prospect” in black font, and his name on the bottom is in black font, and the bottom right reads “1990 Draft, No. 1 Pick” inside a diagonal yellow snipe, and there is also the words ‘Scouting Photo‘ vertical on the left, and the Falcons helmet lines the bottom banner; on the back of the card is a picture of him in his college uniform) - Extremely hard to find pack issued, but not too hard to find sold in a lot of the rest of the ‘Draft Day’ variations for usually no more than $20 as a whole.

669X1-8. Jeff George Draft Day Proof Set - (8 Different cards, 4 Blank backs [1 for each Jeff George 669 card] and 4 Blank fronts [1 for each Jeff George 669 card] - These cards all have different borders and slightly varied designs for these Draft Day cards and were mock-up variations for the original Draft Day set) - Extremely hard to find; can be found rarely sold as regular blank fronts/backs. More experienced set collectors can identify the differentiation between the regular set card quite easily.

701A. Fred Washington - Bloody Face ERR (On the back of the card, his face is red and there almost looks like a blot of blood on his neck) - Not too hard to find, but a little rarer than all other versions and represents a very dark colored and thusly shortly run printing phase of the card.

723A. Oliver Barnett - Incorrect Position ERR (On the front of the card, his position is listed as ‘DT’, while on the back it’s listed as ‘NT’) - Not very hard to find, but nonetheless one of the harder pack issued versions from the second series of the 1990 set. Usually can be found anywhere from $7-$15.

772A. Dexter Manley - Substance Abuse Variation (On the back of the card, there is a line stating “Reinstated by Commissioner Paul Tagliabue 11 weeks into 1990 season after suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy..”) - The grand-daddy of modern football and sports cards errors or variations. One of the hardest cards out of the set to find and possibly one of the toughest Pro Set cards in it’s company’s 4-5 year history. Issued in the Final Update of the 1990 Pro Set collection and was after a very short pressing changed after Manley and his lawyer found umbrage with the substance-abuse mentioning. It’s conjecture that no more than 50 of these were made, maybe less distributed. Comes around maybe once every 2-3 years and has been soaring in price every time it is listed. Beckett has the retail price at $300 yet once sold in the upper $500s in 2007 and in 2009 one sold in the upper $800s. An unbelievably tough card.)

772B. Dexter Manley - No Substance Abuse / Backwards ‘t’ Variation (On the back of the card, the substance abuse mention has been changed but the card retains two vestiges of the substance abuse variation - a backwards ‘t’ in the word ‘Photo’ of the ‘Official Photo..‘ line on the bottom and a proofing mark near the card number on the back of the card) - A pretty tough card as it represents a transitional phased card early in the Final Update run. Have gone unnoticed until just the past year. Come around once every 4-5 months and have sold at most in the upper $70s.)

Super Bowl Tele-Clinic Promo - Not that hard to find, usually listed every couple of weeks, if not all the time. Can usually be attained for around $5

Super Bowl XXV Promo Folder - Promo Folder that is harder to find than most others that has a Mark Carrier #800 card and a Jack Lambert and Johnny Robinson Super Bowl Supermen card which is denoted by the Super Bowl XXV logo. Somewhat rare, but can be found for cheap usually with some time and searching. There may also be 3-4 other variations with various Pro Set brands from the NHL, MusiCards, and PGA.

Super Bowl Card Show II Promo - Special Promo card handed out at the annual Super Bowl Card Show that is similar to the 1991 Super Bowl XXV insert except in the bottom right there is a “Card Show II” snipe and a different back. Can usually be found for $5-10 with a little searching and time.

Super Bowl XXV Collect-a-Book Promo - Rare version of Pro Set’s Collect-a-Book series describing the Super Bowl and location. Not too hard to find every couple of months or with a little searching online. Can usually be purchased for around $10-15.

Super Bowl XXV Ticket Promo - Extremely rare variation that was either included or a part of a redemption in a rare "men's fragrance" box with the Pro Set logo on the front and includes all of the previous "Ticket Cards" from the Super Bowl Silver Anniversary Set but with one for XXV as well. May have a blank back.

Pro Bowl Promos - Michael Dean Perry w/ and w/o Pro Set Logo & William Roberts - Three promo cards handed out at the Pro Bowl and given to a few choice dealers. Are not very hard to find and can usually be purchased for no more than $10-15 a piece.

Collector’s Edition - Lombardi Hologram - The Collector’s Edition is the original, first ever insert card, pack issued in Series 1 by Pro Set. The original REAL Lombardi Holograms are numbered in a square black ink and numbered 10M (not 10K, which are bootlegged from unnumbered versions). The early numbered versions are hard to come by and the 9000+ have yet to be confirmed because none have been seen. These aren’t all that hard to find, and usually go for anywhere from $40-$80, but potentially more depending on the numbering and condition. Most have some edge chipping on the back due to the nature of the card itself.

Owner’s Edition - Lombardi Hologram - The Owner’s Edition are very hard to find, and funny enough, are seen in UNCUT versions more than in CUT versions with an owner’s name on them. These are VERY RARE and may be 1/1, although that would be hard to confirm given the number of unnumbered Lombardi Holograms. The Owner’s Edition’s only difference is that where the original Holograms say “Collector’s Edition” it says “Owner’s Edition” and I presume were to be given to the owners of various franchises. An example I saw before, yet like most, I couldn’t confirm it’s authenticity, was an Owner’s Edition of the Hologram for “Norman Braman” former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles. This one sold for $150, although I’ve seen the unnamed uncut sheets of two go for less than $50.

Unnumbered Lombardi Hologram - Harder to find than the normal Holograms but usually can be found at least twice a year, if not all the time. These unnumbered holograms were used to bootleg the “10K” versions of the hologram. Can be bought for usually $20.

The entire F.A.C.T. set in binder with original documentation - The F.A.C.T. set has potentially two variations from 1990.. A teacher’s version and a student’s version, although the two versions differentiation is the included documents. The teacher’s version in pristine condition comes with a letter of approval from Lud Denny and the Cincinnati School Board as well as a Teacher’s Game Plan booklet and Instructional Page. The Student version only comes with the Instructional Page, but that can’t be confirmed. The 1990 Set also came in pack versions like the 1991 and 1992 F.A.C.T. sets but are much tougher than the 1991 and 1992 packs. A tough find, but with some intelligent searching might be found. Comes around online maybe once every 2-3 years in pristine form, while singles from the set, other than the Dickerson, can be found sparsely online in various venues.

_Unreleased Raiders AFC Champions Super Bowl XXV Binder Set_
152. Many were destroyed but a few made it through to some dealers and have become a very hard find in completing the set. Reyna Thompson
771. Johnny Johnson
778. Wayne Haddix
Super Bowl Art 12B. Super Bowl XII - Somewhat hard to find; these variations, in regards to the Tasker, Thompson, Johnson, and Haddix variations are different from the original versions in that the “Pro Set Prospect” banner on the front of the card at the top is replaced with “1990 Final Update” in the banner. The Super Bow XII Variation is different from the original in that the top of the card is white on the back where the silver border is. The Pro Bowl binders are pretty hard to find, they come around about 2-3 times a year online and at eBay. There are a couple different versions. I can attest to this. There is one version that doesn’t come with the Tasker, Thompson, Johnson, and Haddix Variations, and one that does. The Pro Bowl binder has the 1991 Pro Bowl Logo on the front, the Pro Set logo on the back, and is all white with in-bound clear 9 pocket sleeves. There may also be a “Player’s Edition” that is bound by Pigskin or the same material used for a football and was handed out to team players, coaches, and officials, though I can not confirm this as of right now.

_Unreleased “Owner’s Edition” Of the 1990 Pro Set (Marked Volume 1)_
Culled from my own research, this is another Pigskin or the same material used for a football bound binder or album that includes all of the entire 1990 Pro Set Football set but also has “Informational” cards for different aspects of the set, similar to the Errors and Variations Binder. I only have one photo of the binder with a picture of the first page (taken from worth point.com). It sold for $250 at the time of the auction and may be extremely rare, although I can not gauge it’s rarity because I have only one instance of seeing it with no former information of it. There is also a Volume 2.

The entire set is so vast, that it truly can be a bewildering, yet fun task to take up. The set has so many different design variations and weird errors that it truly is one of a kind. To complete this set it will take some time and dedication. Good luck!

The 1990 Pro Set Barry Sanders 1A & 1B - A Look At The Differences

Everyone knows about the 1A Barry Sanders Promo Card - the non pack issued version of his #1 Rookie of the Year card. A look at eBay and elsewhere you'll see multiple sellers dishing out these "handouts" that are listed as the card in mention but will actually be the "error" or "proof" versions(or as I call them "fire kindling"). There are six known versions of these cards and they are all most certainly bulk errors that were either acquired by Pro Set after it's closure or they may have actually been passed out at shows just to gain feedback regarding design. However they were procured, they are most certainly NOT the 1A Barry Sanders, and I'm going to do a cursory profile of the Hawaii Trade Conference 1A Barry Sanders and the pack issued 1B Barry Sanders.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 144px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K6XVo0ZfAPo/S_keF-AVbtI/AAAAAAAAACM/8P3k-6cyQQ0/s200/PS1B1AFr.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474439909938130642" />First thing that stands out is the exclusion of the "The Official NFL Card" line in bold black font at the top. Also notice how the Pro Set Logo is sans the red border, probably in it's nascent stage from the original logo that had the bold uppercase P and S in Pro Set next to the NFL Emblem. The picture itself in the 1A has a small red font in the bottom left that's hard to see unless magnified that says "NFL PHOTO" and on the right side is what looks to be the foot/leg of an offensive lineman from the Lions. Both of these vestiges were removed in the pack issued version (Seems the lineman's leg was airbrushed and edited out, because if you look close there is a disparity with the picture where his leg used to be). The last three notable differences between the two seem to be a thinner blue border at the bottom of the 1A, a more vivid/brighter gold bordering at the top of the pack issued 1B, and a smaller bottom border on the 1B (you can tell the picture has a little more height). Now, on to the flipsides of the cards...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 138px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K6XVo0ZfAPo/S_ksFfP_daI/AAAAAAAAACU/v61turrWtec/s200/PS1B1ABa.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474455294845089186" />There are multiple differences in the backs of both cards. First of all, like on the front, you can tell the gold borders are thicker on the 1A, the gold borders on the 1B are a little brighter or "golder", and the silver/white border is thinner on the 1A. Also, the main difference, and the one trait that is best known for distinguishing the two is a picture of Barry Sanders in his uniform and pads on the 1A whereas the 1B has him holding his Rookie of the Year trophy with inserted card. Secondly, on the 1A, the middle border above the stat. lines has the word "LIONS" in the middle and instead of of the typical Lions font on the right there is a Lions helmet. Thirdly, the stats themselves are spaced more significantly on the 1A and in the bio. notes, the second and third line has been switched from "A natural.." to "One of number.." on the 1B and "Became only third.." to "Other notables:..". Also, on the 1A, underneath his profile picture is personal information in a thin red font, similar to the pack issued cards (other than the font style) whereas the 1B comes with no notes underneath. Now on the bottom of the card, you can tell that the 1A has the red borderless second edition of the Pro Set Logo. There is also the Red and Blue NFL Player's Association Logo on the 1A that was the same one used on the 1989 Pro Set cards (that is, in the middle is the phrase "Officially Licensed Products" more significant spacing in the gold border on the 1B for the logo itself). The "TM" is smaller on the 1A Pro Set Logo and the Registered symbol is smaller and red whereas on the 1B the "TM" is larger on the Pro Set Logo and the Registered Symbol is larger and in black font. And the last of all these differences as you can tell from the photo is the switching of the two lines at the bottom from top to bottom and the lines themselves being smaller on the 1A. Also, the 1A has the phrase "(Copywrite Symbol) 1990 National Football League Properties." whereas the 1B has dropped the "Properties". Also, the text on the 1A is much smaller...

Well now, that's a heckuva a lot of distinctions between the two when taking a closer look. I thought a post like this would be interesting because it is possible, although highly unlikely, that some dealers could list this card not knowing it's worth and you'd be able to tell the difference regardless of what side is showing. Since most dealers scan the front, if you can't make out that "The Official NFL Card" line on the top of the card, and the dealer hasn't mentioned it having one of the proofing errors of "Blank Back", "Wrong Back", or "Double Front", it's probably that card. This wasn't how I acquired this card, but nonetheless is probably a good way to search for it online.

Also, it should be noted, that the 6 different variations of the proof cards really are worth no more than a dollar or two. Some are a little harder to find, but do not be duped into buying these thinking they are the 1A Barry Sanders. They include the following: White Border/Blank Back, White Border/Upside Down White Border Back, Gold Border/Blank Back, Blank Front/Gold Border Back, Gold Front/White Front, Gold Front/Gold Front. These are all mock-ups, proofs, or otherwise a bulk amount of cards that aren't the 1990 Pro Set 1A.

And that does it for this post. Looking at the 1A Barry Sanders it's probably likely that this was the first 1990 Pro Set card printed. It bears the 1989 Pro Set NFLPA logo and a "transitional" second edition Pro Set logo without the red borders. Good luck in finding one, it may take some time, but they do show up from time to time. This isn't near as hard in acquiring as many more cards from this set but we'll go into detail of those later. Until next time..

Pro Set - 1989 Series I and II (The Story Behind The Beginning)

Looking at many of the cards from this period of time, Pro Set is really a cut above in design. While the condition sensitive nature of the set (even in cards coming directly out of packs), years prior to Pro Set's inclusion into the hobby saw many collectors apathetic to the bland designs that had started to inundate the hobby. While Topps had moderate success with American Football, the designs lacked vivid action shots, and had many pictures of the football players on the bench or sitting on the sidelines. The popularity and aesthetic appreciation per each year was sporadic and when Lud Denny came into the fold of one of America's favorite collectible hobbies, things changed immediately.

Ludwell Denny was an oil magnate and ran a printing press that turned out US currency prior to the formation of Pro Set Cards. In the two years prior to Pro Set, he and a small group of investors created sports memorabilia for the NFL, making his segue into the hobby much easier. His vision saw the hobby as being void of a quality football card, a sport that was continuing to grow and challenging Baseball as the most popular sport in the country. In 1989, Lud signed a contract with the NFL to print a card that would revolutionize the hobby and reinvigorate interest into a sport that the country loved so much. So with a marketing strategy as "The Official NFL Card", Pro Set was born. It's distinction as such allowed the company to glean the most interesting and action filled photos from NFL Properties archive of pictures.

This inaugaural Series of NFL Photo Cards also became the first Football card to utilize color on both sides of the cards, as well as a profile shot of the player on the back of the card next to the biography synopsis. Within weeks, it was evident that Pro Set had created a quality product, but also a collection full of personality as there quickly came to the fore a hand full of errors and variations, a trait Pro Set became popular for. At first, these widespread errors fetched a heavy premium among collectors. This year also marked the beginning of Score's excursion into Football and made the hobby usher in a new era for Football collectors.

After it's first Series, Pro Set came out with a second series, or Series II, of it's 1989 Football Product. These cards came with 15 cards per pack, 11 Series 1 cards, and 4 Series 2 cards which featured rookies from the draft and Pro Set Prospects. Barry Sanders and Troy Aikman are among the standouts of the 1989 rookie class. Shortly after the Series II release, Pro Set created a binder for it's employees bound in the same material used on Wilson Footballs entitled "Pro Set: Errors & Variations". It featured all of the Error and Variation cards from the 1989 Series I and II Football set and included specialized display pages and information cards describing the error and/or variation and were printed on the same Pro Set Card Stock from the 1989 set. These binders are very rare collectibles. An educated guess on the number created is probably no more than 200-300 at the very most, although this number is based upon the number of these seen over the past two years.

This binder is special on multiple fronts. Not just the binder's rarity but some of the included rarities (either intentional or not) that came with it. Take for instance the rarest two cards from the 1989 set, the 480D Earnest Byner and the 483D Gerald Riggs cards. While the binder's info cards on the Byner and Riggs pages mention only the the difference in the 480A/480B and 483A/483B cards, the binder includes a 480D and 483D card. These are the Earnest Byner and Gerald Riggs cards from Series II without the Traded Snipe but including the "See Also.." line at the bottom of the bio. notes on the back of the card. There was no 478D variation included in the binder and whether these were intentional inclusions can't be confirmed. These D variations fetch a good price and are listed by Beckett at $150 retail which is an accurate pricing premium unlike some of the other cards from the first three Pro Set collections.

The set also included C variations for card numbers 478, 480, and 483. These cards are almost as rare as the D variations themselves. They include each card with the Traded Snipe on the front of the card but without the "See Also.." line that was included with most of the Traded Snipe versions that referenced the Series I card of each of the players. These cards are rare and usually can fetch $50 a piece, if not more, even though Beckett lists them at $40 retail.

The #535A Gizmo Williams is probably the third rarest card from the 1989 Set. It is the Gizmo Williams "Pro Set Prospect" card from Series II, without the Scouting Photo on the front and a mispelling of the word "Football" on the back of the card in the bio. notes. It is spelled "Footbal", and in subsequent versions you can tell a lowercase L has been included in between "Footbal" and "League" without a space seperating the two words. An interesting note as well is this new L correcting the spelling looks to have a small cross through the top of it making it look somewhat like a T. Once again, the binder info card for the Gizmo Williams page neglects to tell about the "footbal" error yet it's quite obvious that they took the time to correct it. I've heard reports from only two other acquirees of the binder that the #535A was and wasn't included in the binder, thusly included arbitrarily.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 154px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_K6XVo0ZfAPo/S_bPSEJuLeI/AAAAAAAAACE/WscncBLK9nE/s200/Gizmo535ABack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473790306374528482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 145px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K6XVo0ZfAPo/S_bPRiYhKKI/AAAAAAAAAB8/ba6GXsiyuSI/s200/Gizmo535A.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473790297309784226" />
From here on out, the sets rarities reach a grey area as far as obscurity, pricing, and availability. The Prototype Set (also mentioned and displayed in the Errors and Variations Binder) is probably next. You can find singles sold overly priced here and there, but they only come around every once in a while it seems sold together. It is an 8 Card Set, Dan Marino (#1), Jerry Rice (#2), Eric Dickerson (#3), Reggie White (#4), Mike Singletary (#5), Frank Minnifield (#6), Phil Simms (#7), and Jim Kelly (#8). All of the players have different pictures on the front from their Series I counterparts except for the Jerry Rice card which obtained it's original action photo. The cards are all presented with a vertical back design and different profile pictures. On the top front the name is also presented in all capital letters with their position underneath instead of the later position / team name and lowercase lettering. Also, the first year Pro Set logo (the words Pro Set with a bold P and S) takes the place of the NFL Logo and the NFL Logo is moved over in place of either the NFC or AFC Logo or team helmet (in the case of the Series II cards). These can go for anywhere to $40-$200.

Then there are the three promo cards of James Lofton, Thomas Sanders, and Blair Bush. All three cards were presented at trade shows prior to the Series II printing.
The Thomas Sanders card is #'d 445 (instead of #446 as it was presented in Series II) and is similar to it's regular Series II card. The James Lofton (#463) was later replaced by Greg Townsend and the Blair Bush (#455) was replaced by Eric Dickerson after Eric reached an agreement with Pro Set and the NFLPA for inclusion. These can run anywhere from $20 per set to $30 per card. These are displayed front and back with their replacements in the Errors and Variations binder.

After these Promo sets there is the Santa Claus Card (#1989). These were distributed with the 1989 NFL Properties Christmas Card in December 1989. They are somewhat rare and when they come around usually go for $30-$40. On the top left of the front of the card is the logo for "Officially Licensed Product", an NFL Properties business distinction. The back has a humurous description and bio. stats. These are also displayed in the Errors and Variations binder.

The most notorious of most of the errors from this set is the William Perry Short Print (#47). This is also mentioned in short detail in the Errors and Variations binder as being a mistake in being left on the printing press even after William Perry was made unavailable for the set for not being in the NFL Players Association. The info card estimates 5,000-9,000 of the cards were issued in the Series I set. These usually go for around $10 when they are sold. His card was eventually replaced by Jim Morris. These kinds of issues became quite a problem for Pro Set in years to come being tied to the NFL officially. In fact, when they finally shut down their operation they cited almost a million dollars in debts to the NFLPA because of including players in their cards without their consent or the consent of the NFLPA.

From here most of the variations and errors are quite prevalent or at least can be acquired for usually no more than $5 and aren't that hard to find. This includes the #52 Mike Ditka Hall of Fame Stripe and w/o, the #100 John Elway Draft/Traded Variations, #193 Stacey Toran (w/ and w/o Death Stripe), #214 Ferrell Edmonds/Edmunds variations, #260 Raymond Berry w/ and w/o Hall of Fame Stripe, #266 Bobby Hebert "passes"/"passers" variations, #355 Chuck Noll "One of three"/"One of two",#363 Anthony Miller "3"/"14.8" variations, #391 Brian Bosworth "Seahawks"/"Seattle" variations, #404 Curt Warner 1,455/6,074 variations, and #535 b/c (w/ and w/o Scouting Photo on the bottom right of the picture on front.. does not include the "footbal" error that contains the w/o Scouting Photo trait). All of the above cards are included with their own info cards in the 1989 Errors and Variations Binder.

The last set was closed out with a Final Update that contained a 20 card update of trades, signings, and miscellaneous players who had a standout year. One of the cards (#541) was Coach Art Shell who also received his own page in the Errors and Variations Binder with included info card. It should be noted that the final printing of the Series II cards had a "FNL UPDATE" version stamped on the sides of the cases and these cards included the cards from the Final Update.

Before finishing this post, it should also be noted that there is a 5 card Prototype or Promo Set of Randall Cunningham cards that are at times falsely written as "Tests" or "1988 Pro Set Prototypes". They were actually initially created and passed out at trade shows to gain opinion for potential designs for the 1990 set. They have the first year Pro Set logo on them and have multiple designs including Full Bleed, Gray Borders, Black Borders, a Top border and Side border, as well as vertical and horizontal black and blue borders on the back. These cards can fetch a decent price. Usually anywhere from $75-$150 as all five or $20-$40 individually. They are also somewhat hard to find for a normal price.

Looking back at the initial Pro Set Football collection, the company also released a quarterly "Gazette" that contained information on the company's endeavors and products. The 1989 Gazettes are much harder to find than later Gazettes because less were printed and distributed. In these first Gazettes, Lud Denny makes mention of his concept of the "Living Set"; a concept that predicated and fueled what draws in collectors today for their mid-printing corrections and variation inclusions. This is the same concept that either inadvertently or intentionally created errors and variations that the company didn't even address or know about! But in the beginning of the hobby's mainstream growth, Pro Set created a nice, colorful and aesthetically pleasing card that garnered some positive attention and would later carry over to a set that has become infamous in the world of Football cards.. the 1990 Set! That is a set that would take multiple posts just to describe half of it.

..And keeping with Lud's line of thinking, this is a "Living Post" that will later include pictures of the cards and the Errors and Variations binder, as well as potential extra information regarding the set.

A New Blog For Pro Set Collectors

Welcome to the brand new Pro Set Football blog - an outlet for all Pro Set collectors to explore one of the hobbies most interesting and fascinating sets! While Pro Set is looked down upon by many collectors, many of us who grew up around that time remember it as part of our initial forays into collecting cards. And as the years have gone by, people have found out that completing their sets can be a daunting task! Not just are prices growing on the rarest of the sets cards but just FINDING the most elusive pieces is a task in and of itself.

In the coming weeks, I'll be adding information, checklists, images, and other tidbits about the Pro Set Football collections. While the first cadre of posts will be dedicated to the 1989-1991 Pro Set Football pressings, I may eventually add information regarding the 1992-1993 Pro Set and Pro Set Power collections as well. While Pro Set made multiple different card collections (Hockey, Racing, and American TV Shows), the fervor that drives most collectors is in the first three Football pressings for it's multitude of rarities, it's unique errors and variations, and it's overall personality during the era of sports card overproduction. The fact that Pro Set was probably the poster company for this maligning trait of this period of time in the hobby is what usually finds collectors so interested at why many of it's rarities fetch a high price. And I dare say this is what attracts some of the people to the set.

Look forward to new and exciting posts, as well as some heretofore unseen variations found through my own research.

~Trent P.
